VMJ-244

HK$1,500.00

Not a mahjong set, but an example of how the bone and bamboo tiles we associate with mahjong were also used for another very popular game, Pai Jiu (Making Nine). Made up of 32 tiles and evolved from domino-type games, the game involves arranging dealt tiles into 2 sets of 4 tiles to make pairs to maximise winning combinations. The scoring is complex and provides the greatest challenge to players.

This set is complete and is housed in a wood box. Each tile is hand-carved and coloured and the tiles are a thick 80:20 bone and bamboo.

In some vintage sets at least some of the pai jiu tiles are repurposed from mahjong tiles, with the dots added over the top of worn mahjong suit tiles. In this set the tiles were carved for pai jiu, making it a more unusual find.
