VMJ-238

HK$3,000.00

This set was made for the UK market in the 1920’s-1930’s, probably for the board game manufacturer, Gibsons. The 148 tiles (including 4 blank tiles) are made of bamboo and are hand-carved and coloured. Each tile has a carved romanised letter or number to aid identification. The set is complete with a small dice box containing bone dice, wind indicators and a quantity of bone scoring sticks. The set also has a Game of the Four Winds rule book which has the British Rules as popularised by Gibsons.

The 8 ‘flower and season’ tiles show 4 flowers and the 4 Scholarly Pursuits (Qin, Go, Calligraphy & Painting), all simply but elegantly executed.

The box is unusual, but sadly damaged, with one side of the lid now missing (see images). It is made from a type of board, covered in a red brocade fabric, with a large red tassel and internal divisions. The brocade is threadbare in parts and a ‘jade’ decoration attached to the tassel is now broken. The style is possibly more Japanese than Chinese.

This set will be sent from our Shanghai studio.
