VMJ-241

HK$3,000.00

This all bamboo set was made in China for Gibson’s of London. The 144 bamboo tiles are naively carved and coloured, arranged in 4 trays with the 5th tray containing a quantity of bamboo scoring sticks, original horn ming box with wind indicators, one of which is now missing, and a minibox containing bone dice. There are also 4 replacement tiles in their original wrapping.

The yellow card box in which the trays are stacked has suffered some damage over the years but is still serviceable (see photos). The information of the top of the box identifies it as produced by P. Gibson & Son as part of their International Series and ‘guaranteed Chinese.’ These sets would have been made in China, probably Shanghai, in workshops that employed young men to carve and colour the bamboo which may account for the naivety of style.

The set includes a rare hardbook edition of Gibson’s British rulebook.
